Growing garlic in a garden with a sandy loam that is well-dug and crumbly always helps for healthier growth. Avoid any clay-sand patches as they tend to hamper the development of your garlic plant.

Plant it roughly 2 inches deep inside the soil, pointing the tip upwards. Try to keep a distance of at least 9 inches between each clove for better results. Cover the clove with a layering of compost and mulch.

How To Care For Garlic Plants

You need to keep the freshly-planted garlic seeds moist for an initial period to supply them with adequate nutrients to grow adequately. Garlic plants hate wet soil, and growing garlic in water is a terrible idea, for instance.

Watering the soil once a week is sufficient if you live in a somewhat humid climate. Pests and insects may try to munch on your plant, so be sure to apply pesticides in small quantities over a longer period.

How To Harvest Garlic

To grow your own garlic, you need to know how to harvest it properly. However, harvesting garlic is super easy. To start with, you can notice green stalks growing out of the soil. They are called scapes. The colour of these scapes decides if the plant needs more time to fully mature.

Reddish or brown scapes indicate they need more time, whereas a green and plump scape shows the growth cycle has completed, and the plant is ready to be harvested.

Firstly, take a shovel or gardening fork to detach the area around each garlic bulb to pull them without damaging them. Be extra careful during this stage, as garlic tends to get bruised pretty easily. To store your garlic, keep them in a dry or cool to prevent any kind of moisture damage.
